Biography
Daniel Hale Williams was an African-American surgeon who performed one of the first successful open-heart surgeries in 1893, repairing a stab wound to the pericardium. He founded Provident Hospital in Chicago, the first non-segregated hospital in the United States and one of the first to have a nursing school for African Americans.
