Raymond Damadian was an American physician and medical practitioner who was the first to propose and demonstrate that nuclear magnetic resonance could be used to detect disease, leading to the development of MRI scanning. He built the first whole-body MRI scanner ('Indomitable') and performed the first human MRI scan in 1977.
